Safety in you car:
- Always lock your car after entering and exiting it.
- Before getting in your car, check the front and back seats to make sure no one is hiding inside. Do this even if your car is locked.
- Have your keys in hand so you don't have to linger before entering the car and be aware of your surroundings.
- Do not offer rides to strangers.
- If you suspect that someone is following you drive to the nearest open public place and sound your horn.
Safety in your residence: - Keep your room door locked when you are in and when you leave.
- Do not prop residence hall exterior doors. These doors may be locked at designated times for your protection.
- Report suspicious persons in or around your residence.
- Keep windows locked.
Walking at night: - Avoid going out alone at night. After dark, you should always be in groups of two or more people.
- Walk near the curb and avoid walk ways that pass close to shrubbery, dark doorways and other places of concealment.
- Stay in well lit areas.
- Avoid parking and walking alone in parking lots after dark.
If you are attacked: - You may choose to run, scream, kick, bite or use a defensive weapon such as pepper spray, depending on the location and the circumstances. Remember that your goal is to escape safely. You may choose to cooperate with your attacker if you think help is not immediately available and that resisting will lead to serious injury or death. Every situation is different. Never feel guilty about what you did or did not do.
- If you are sexually assaulted, go to a safe place and call the police. Do not bathe, shower or douche. Do not discard torn or soiled clothing. Police officers will transport you to a hospital where you will be treated for injuries and evidence will be collected. Counselors and representatives from sexual assault support groups will be available to assist you.
